This semester I plan to create a visual understanding of the grieving process using epoxy resin, photography, film, paint and other mixed media. I plan to focus my emotional and artistic experiences with these stages into five pieces.

First, I will construct five rectangular wooden molds into which I will pour the layers of epoxy resin in combination with a variety of other media. I then am going to create a video of myself being interviewed about my experiences with the five stages of grieving, out of which I am going to take still images to place on the first and bottom layer of each piece. On top of the photo I plan to pour epoxy resin and paint on each layer once they are dry, layering paint and epoxy to create a three dimensional appearance. I hope to create an illusion that the paint is not simply separated by layers of epoxy, but is one big mass of color both deep and close to the surface.

I have decided to continue working with epoxy resin because I feel that there is much more that I have yet to experience and learn about this material. I plan to harness what I know and combine that with new ways to use the epoxy as not only a separator for the paint, but a way of pulling the work together as a whole to create layers of thoughts, color and emotions throughout each piece.

I have chosen the concept of the stages of grieving because I feel that it is something that I have allowed to get in the way of my artwork this past year. Ever since my Dad passed away last February, my art has taken a turn for the worse. I have become uninspired and uninterested in painting almost completely. By applying painting to these drastic life changes, I feel that I will either fail due to the overwhelming emotion or I will harness this to create some beautiful and honest pieces. I am truly confident though, that this project will help me to improve and heal both artistically and emotionally. Art and my grief have been two magnets of the same poles for too long, pushing each other apart constantly. I feel that now more than ever it is time for me to focus on my grief, and utilize it to create beautiful artwork that will hopefully help me to heal and help others to understand what the grieving process may feel like.

My mother’s christmas gift.

This hand textured piece of brass hugs one of my favorite gemstones called Moldavite. Moldavite is a partially translucent green stone, and is one of the only gemstones that is said to have been formed in outer space. On top of this powerful stone is a sterling silver hand cut moon being held by prongs.

I created my first Orgonite device! :)

Orgonite functions as a self driven, continuously operating device. It’s purpose is to draw in negative life energy, then convert it into positive life energy.

Adding crystals helps the Orgonite to function more effectively. It is wise to carefully plan combinations of crystals that you want to use. Doing so can create extremely electric and positive vibrations in both the device, and the surrounding area.

In this device, I have used gold flakes, amethyst, kyanite, moss agate and copper wire.

Every dreamcatcher is unique and each one has a purpose that can really only be determined by the one who created it. Each part of the dreamcatcher is carefully planned out, from the size of the knots down to the pattern of the beads.

I created this dreamcatcher using hemp, 18 gage wire and sea foam seed beads spiraled into the center.

This is a wire wrapped pendant that I made using a crystal called Citrine. Ancient cultures have called Citrine the “stone of the mind”. This stone helps to clear thoughts and also will dissipate negative energies of all kinds. It also is connected with the solar plexus chakra.

The Quartz that is infused in this stone will also help to charge the energies in the Citrine stone, and other crystals that are close to it.
